ABOUT CRICKET CANADA
The earliest confirmed reference to cricket is of matches played on Saint Helen's Island, Quebec in 1785 on what became the site of Expo 67. However, it is believed that cricket was introduced to Canada by British soldiers after the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
When Canada became a nation in 1867, cricket was so popular it was declared the national sport by Prime Minister John A. Macdonald.
Cricket Canada was constituted on the evening of Monday, 28th March 1892 at a meeting held at the Walker House Hotel, which was located across from Union Station in downtown Toronto. The chair was taken by John Wright, who was President of the Ontario Cricket Association, and the Secretary was John E. Hall who in 1895 in conjunction with R.O. McCulloch published a book entitled Sixty Years of Canadian Cricket. Another interesting participant in the meeting was the young 18-year-old John M. (Jack) Laing who was to go on and become the greatest player in the history of Canadian cricket.
Today Cricket Canada is a modern professionally-run organization ranked 15th in the World, which has qualified to play in the 2003 and 2007 Cricket World Cups. Cricket Canada will host the 2012 U19 Cricket World Cup.
